From childhood he had been interested in the Army and took his first step toward a military career when, as a freshman at Roosevelt High School, he joined the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). Upon graduation from high school in 1989, Jason entered the United States Military Academy at West Point. "ARMY BRAT" On Saturdays, Larry Mike would awaken his two young boys at zero six-hundred hours. The house had to be cleaned, the laundry folded, the beds changed. Larry Mike, a career Soldier, lived and breathed the Army. Along with his wife, Sergeant Mike was determined to raise his two boys in a disciplined yet loving environment. As a military family, the Mikes criss-crossed the country from post to post, and also spent some time in Germany. Jason Mike and his older brother realized early on the value of a strict military upbringing. SSG Timothy Nein's heroic actions during combat operation in Iraq contributed to the overwhelming success of the Multinational Corps-Iraq Mission. "A SMALL TOWN BOY" Just across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky, the rolling wooded hills of southern Indiana are dotted with small towns that make up the heart of rural America. View more information about SGT Tommy Rieman Biography: During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Sergeant Tommy Rieman distinguished himself by acts of conspicuous gallantry and courage under fire... "I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE G.I. JOE" Tommy Rieman recounts that from a young age, role models had a profound influence on his interest in joining the Army. Three of his uncles served in the Army. One served in Special Forces and two served as recruiters.As a kid I always wanted to be GI Joe, and as a teenager, I either wanted to play college football or join the Army.By the time he was a junior in high school, Rieman was captain of the football team, playing both quarterback and free safety. View more information about 2LT Gerald Wolford Biography: 2LT Wolford courageously engaged enemy positions and vehicles, exposed himself to hostile fire while bringing casualties to safety, repositioned men and redistributed weapons and equipment under fire, without regard to his personal safety... "I ALWAYS WANTED TO JUMP OUT OF AIRPLANES" 2LT Wolford recalls that when he was young, "Money was always tight, but I never remember going without any necessities." My dad drove logging trucks and my mother worked as a waitress. He spent much of his childhood outdoors, pretending to be n the Army. "My mother says that I've been GI Joe since I was six" and Wolford recalls that he had "always wanted to jump out of airplanes." View more information about SSG Matthew Zedwick Biography: For demonstrated gallantry, heroism, and bravery during an ambush of 2d Platoon, Bravo Company... "AN ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT" While growing up in Oregon, Matthew Zedwick showed an adventurous spirit and an early interest in Soldiering. A budding outdoorsman, he built tree forts and rope swings, climbed and chopped down trees. He describes his childhood as that of "an active kid who didn't care about getting dirty." As he got older, his passion turned to sports. He excelled in wrestling, baseball, basketball and football. "I loved the competition" he says.
